Snowday Sewing

Yesterday Dru asked what I'm creating with my sewing machine. I will share with you what I'm doing, but only if you'll indulge me first by listening to how this sewing adventure came about.

One afternoon last summer my husband was flicking through the channels on the television in his hospital room. He was such a great guy; when he found a sewing program he stopped channel surfing. He knew I'd enjoy the show, so we watched it. That particular day the hostess was showing how to make handbags. When the show was over, my guy turned to me, grinned and said, "You'd like to do that. When we get home, I think you should make some handbags. It looks like fun." I agreed, and the idea was born.

So...I'm home. And, I'll admit, kind of lonely. But we had a good idea last summer, and good ideas don't go bad. So, on these snowy afternoons I'm keeping busy. Yes, I'm making handbags. Want to see?

This little black bag is the first one I made. I've been using it for the past three weeks or so. It's the perfect size for my wallet, keys and phone. It even has pockets for lipstick and a tissue.

I love this hand-dyed fabric. So tropical, don't you think?

A handbag gathering on the kitchen table. Too funny!

I've made a couple of these, just because the colors make me smile.

So there you have it. I'm keeping busy here on the farm. What have you been up to?

WOW. I want to learn how to make bags. They are all beautiful!

How long does it take to make one bag?

Oh I wish I had the talent and the patience to make things like that! So when are you going to start an internet business to sell these because I would love to buy one!!!

Dru, it was really fun to learn how to make bags. I actually made more than one type, and had fun doing each one. Vito was right, he knew I'd enjoy doing this. So glad you liked them! And the amount of time varies, depending on the type and whether or not I put pockets on the inside as well as the outside...you get the idea. The fiddlier the bag, the longer it takes.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you found at your quilt shop this weekend! I bet it was something beautiful!

Wendy, you are so kind! Thank you.

Actually I am making some of them to sell. I'm not ready to use any besides the black one and I've been wrangling with the idea of supporting myself now that my guy's gone so it is in my mind to sell bags. I think he'd get a kick out of the fact that he nudged me toward something that keeps me busy during this rough time, is fun to do and might just help pay the bills. Yep, he's grinning down at me!

And you, my friend, have multitudes of other talents. It's so good to see you again. I missed you!

Oh, I love them. They are so pretty. Practical too. Great job!

Let us know when you start selling them! It's so great how your guy put you on to this. Everything happens for a reason we just don't always know why at the time!

I'm writing! And trying to keep up with my blog tour comments. One stop left tomorrow!!!

Thank you, Melissa. It makes me feel comforted to do this, both because it gives me time to heal but also because my guy is behind it. He's never steered me wrong. :)

I hope your writing is going well!
